VoIP hardware users are among the UK residents who still face vagaries over their broadband speeds.

Consumers accessing the internet in different areas of the country are subject to a "huge" divide when it comes to connectivity, Broadbandchoices.co.uk has asserted.

Michael Phillips, product director at the firm, recently claimed that this trend has been driven by private sector organisations focusing their efforts on commercial hubs and population centres.

He called on the government to address the problem and claimed both leadership and increased investment will be required to rectify the issue.

"It is up to the government to plug those gaps and it is what we need as a capital economy," the industry expert asserted.

A recent report from Ofcom indicated that rural areas tend to have lower broadband speeds than their urban counterparts.

The organisation's study found that these zones typically have a greater proportion of customers receiving connectivity under the 2Mbit/s mark.
