Officials at Lincolnshire County Council are meeting today (July 4th) to discuss whether to apply for funding in order to improve broadband speeds in the South Holland region of the country.

A committee is to consider bidding for a grant from Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) to improve internet coverage in the region, the Spalding Guardian reports, however is it thought that if the authority is unsuccessful in its request then South Holland could be left behind while the rest of the country gains access to high-quality broadband.

"It affects the whole economy of the district. Businesses particularly rely on an internet connection and businesses create jobs," Gary Taylor, portfolio holder for business development at South Holland District Council, claims.

And while Mr Taylor acknowledges some parts of the region can currently achieve decent speeds, he claims that firms and public sector organisations need to keep up the pressure to ensure that the entire area receives investment in broadband.

BDUK aims to ensure that the UK has the best superfast broadband network across all of Europe by 2015.
