Fibre optics for broadband and networking applications will raise revenues of more than $20 billion (£12 billion) in 2016, according to Ovum.

The Datamonitor research brand says the upswing out of the current economic downturn will have its part to play in the profitable nature of the sector.

While growth will not be seen in every country of the world, across the board a compound annual growth rate of six per cent is expected.

Europe, the Middle East and Africa should see expansion, while North America could outpace the global average at an increase of as much as 12 per cent this year alone.

Mass-market adoption of broadband connections capable of distributing internet access at 40 Gbps and 100 Gbps across the on-site network is a further driving force behind the trend.

Ovum recently reported a rise in the deployment of green IT technologies as business leaders become aware of the cost savings - rather than the reputational benefits - associated with reducing power consumption and improving device usage.
