More broadband customers are becoming aware of the cost advantages of triple-play services, according to a report from ABI Research.

The analyst claims that there are benefits both for the customer in terms of cost and for operators in terms of reducing churn in their user base.

"Increasing penetration of multi-play services drives the growth in the subscriber base," it reports in an update on the subscription television market worldwide.

"Bundled services are more cost-effective for customers than subscribing to each service separately."

In the UK, subscription television - whether by satellite or cable - is the newest addition to multi-play services.

Previously, multi-play services consisted of just two utilities, telephony and broadband, as dial-up gave way to faster internet access and the communications providers bundled it into their line rental packages.

Now customers have the choice between telecommunications firms that have added media to their offerings, media firms that have added telecoms, or specialist providers dedicated to high qualities of all three components.
