A rundown of the most innovative producers of
VoIP phones of all time has ranked the
Asterisk IP PBX within the top two.
Tom Keating writes on his TMCnet blog that he discovered the open-source IP PBX in 2001 during his hunt for a platform compatible with Linux.
Digium, subtitled as "the Asterisk company", formed soon after Mr Keating discovered Asterisk - and he notes how the features list has grown rapidly in the years since.
"Now, Asterisk is well-known in the IP PBX space and has a rabid and loyal following," he writes.
Among the core features of the platform are
voicemail, call parking, call transfer and call bridging.
But organisations are also discovering drastic falls in their total cost of ownership, thanks to the cost benefits of the LAN-based
VoIP PBX, he adds.
Mr Keating also reveals that TMC's own IP telephony system is powered by an Asterisk-based IP PBX.
