Cable broadband market sees record port shipments

Demand for cable broadband equipment appears to be higher than ever, with a record number of cable modem termination system (CMTS) ports shipped in the first quarter of 2011.

Figures from Infonetics Research show a 39 per cent increase in number in the CMTS ports segment over the three-month period worldwide.

In the US the growth was particularly marked, with the total number of ports shipped almost doubling.

"Price reductions will stabilise and, after this year, we'll see sustained revenue growth for the CMTS and CMAP market as operators' demand for capacity will more than offset further reductions in pricing," says directing analyst for broadband access at Infonetics Research Jeff Heynen.

In the current report, significant pricing pressures have helped to subdue revenues, although they may also have driven overall sales volumes higher.

Mr Heynen is described by Infonetics Research as a "widely recognised" speaker, author and consultant in the broadband access field.
