British Telecom (BT) is to raise its call charges by nine per cent as of today.

Millions of customers around the UK will once again be hit with a price increase as the cost of making a call goes up from 7p a minute to 7.6p.

The company has increased calling costs by 41 per cent this year and homeowners looking for a potentially cheaper option may consider using VoIP phones as an alternative.

Monthly line rental will also rise for the third time in a year, from £12.79 to £13.90 and call connection charges will go up to 12.5p, more than 30 per cent up on the 9.3p charged at the start of the year.

Customers can also expect to pay more for using the call minder service, but BT is not the only phone company putting up its prices with Talk Talk and Virgin set to announce similar rate changes.

Speaking to the Daily Express, a spokesman said: "Our Anytime customers don’t worry about call charges as their UK calls, 24/7, are included for £4.70 a month. The changes mean we can invest in even better value plans."

Although BT has not released a statement on the price changes customers have received notification via post.
