VoIP solutions could be one way to allow fathers to work flexibly with less impact on the company.

Adrienne Burgess, head of research at the Fatherhood Institute, notes the changes that are occurring within the UK workforce as more mothers go back to work sooner and for longer hours.

She says employers "are now beginning to recognise that men have substantial caring responsibilities".

For companies keen to cater for their male employees' needs for flexibility, VoIP solutions could be one option.

These can patch through office extension numbers to VoIP hardware at the employee's own home, transmitting the data over a virtual private network (VPN).

VPNs also carry other advantages, such as the ease with which data can be encrypted, ensuring that communications are secure even if they include employees who work remotely.

Finally, VoIP hardware may also help companies with remote workers to keep a tight rein on their expenses outgoings, by substituting IP-based telephony for more expensive mobile phones.
