Consumers can expect their broadband costs to reduce as Ofcom looks to cut wholesale access charges to BT's Openreach.

BT's wholesale access division has been asked to reduce the charge to communications providers for access to some of its main wholesale telecoms services the regulator announced today.

Households that use voip phones to make regular calls could see real term price reductions for internet use if communications providers pass on savings to broadband customers.

The proposed prices will look to provide incentives to invest in networks and ensure that broadband and prices are affordable for consumers.

Ofcom is consulting on controls on yearly wholesale rental charges which are expected to take effect later this year and will remain until March 2014.

Although the price changes will look to reduce landline costs for households, many people are looking to voip hardware as an alternative to this and with BT set to increase its landline charges by nearly ten per cent many me be keen to switch.
