The mobile space represents the next area for attention in the IP telephony solutions market, according to a report from Research and Markets.

In Mobile VoIP: Operators Must Re-Evaluate Their Core Portfolio, the analyst claims IP telephony solutions for mobile phones are a good way of delivering 'over-the-top' (OTT) content.

This delivery model uses one transport method for the main communications broadcast, with another carrying related data or services - such as using the internet to enhance television or video broadcasts to home viewers.

For mobile phones, Research and Markets says the portable handsets represent a much better fit for the OTT VoIP phones segment than fixed lines.

By 2015, the report predicts more than eight per cent of western Europe's outgoing voice traffic - around one in 12 calls - will be carried by OTT VoIP.

"The 'VoIP as email' rhetoric is being replayed," notes Research and Markets, "this time in the context of loosening operators' once-powerful grip on the mobile value chain".
