IP telephony solutions can be supported with the right network configuration, a Digium blog post suggests.

Sales engineer David Faulk helps organisations to solve their complex communications problems by using Digium IP telephony solutions.

In his Inside the Asterisk blog post of March 15th, he notes how prioritising the data packets that carry the voice or video signal can help to do this.

"Prioritise your unified communications packets," he advises.

"This can be audio, video, chat and other services provided by your unified communications solution."

He argues that one statement continues to be proved as true during his work - the principle that the underlying network governs how good the quality of the signal will be when deploying IP phones or videoconferencing capabilities.

Minimising network jitter and reducing both latency and packet loss - to below 100 ms and one per cent respectively - are further recommendations made by Mr Faulk.
