Companies switched on to the cost savings associated with using VoIP phones might welcome the prediction that the technology will increasingly be promoted for long-distance calling.

Research and Markets has added a new report, Global - VoIP - Overview & Insights, to its portfolio.

In the study, compiled by telecoms research specialist Paul Budde Communication, 2011 is singled out as the year in which operators around the world will look to promote the use of VoIP phones over long distances.

"Mobile VoIP is also becoming a key area of focus, particularly in Europe and North America," the report adds.

The study also indicates that IP telephony solutions are a continued area for investment despite the economic downturn.

As the switch to VoIP is able to save companies money on their ongoing call costs, this is encouraging firms to make the outlay needed to put IP telephony solutions in place, the analysis explains.
