The total cost of ownership (TCO) of a Digium Switchvox unified communications solution is as much as 80 per cent less than its competitors in the IP PBX market, the company claims.

Switchvox is based on Asterisk, open source software for IP telephony, carrying with it a 60 per cent drop in initial capital outlay and 80 per cent reduction in TCO over five years of use.

Much of the cost of competitor IP PBX and unified communications solutions arises from charges levied for add-ons, Digium says.

As a result, it may be sensible to compare different products based on the individual cost of features that may be required, rather than on the headline all-in figure.

The company also cites research from In-Stat which predicts that, by 2013, VoIP phones are expected to be in use in 80 per cent of companies.

In-Stat found in early 2010 that many firms had spent the previous year expanding their use of VoIP phones specifically for voice connections, rather than extending IP communication capabilities to new offices for general purpose applications.
