Consumers who enjoy the benefits of the internet, such as VoIP solutions, must be aware of security and the need to combat cybercrime, an expert has warned.

Dan Nadir, senior director of consumer products at internet security specialist Norton, said criminals are using techniques that are more sophisticated than ever, making it essential for everyone to think seriously about their level of online protection.

Earlier this month, the company launched its new Cybercrime Index in a bid to reduce the level of fraudulent activity by warning consumers about current risks.

Mr Nadir remarked that he hoped the index would give people the tools they need to take a "more considered approach" over the data they provide via the internet.

"While good security software is critical, even perfect security software cannot prevent a user from unintentionally giving out too much information online," he added.

The overall cost to the UK economy from cybercrime is £27 billion per year, according to the Office of Cyber Security and Information Assurance in the Cabinet Office.
