The use of VoIP phones is largely seeing uptake in business settings rather than in households, according to an industry analyst.

Norm Bogen, vice-president of digital entertainment research for In-Stat, says corporate environments are leading the shift to IP-based telecommunications, in place of traditional telephony.

"The vast majority of IP phones are sold to businesses," he asserts.

His comments follow the recent publication of research by In-Stat which showed growing demand for IP phones over the course of 2010.

Mobile VoIP handsets saw 40 per cent increase, while across the board the analyst anticipates 40 million IP handsets will ship during 2015, based on current growth rates.

As well as removing the reliance on a fixed telephone line, Mr Bogen suggests that the uptake of IP-based telephony is allowing businesses to communicate in more advanced ways.

"These applications are more clearly understood in the enterprise space, where IP-based communication is replacing time-division multiplexed networks at a steady pace," he adds.
