Companies may want to invest in VoIP hardware to support their environmental commitments under the "transition to a green economy".

Initiatives like the Green Deal aim to reward both businesses and households for measures that improve their energy efficiency.

The scheme has one basic principle - that the savings made should ultimately outweigh the initial cost of undertaking improvements to property.

However, as the wider economy moves towards greener ways of working, VoIP hardware could allow firms to give remote workers their own extension on the company network.

As a result, the environmental impact of their commute could be removed entirely from an organisation's carbon footprint.

Business secretary Vince Cable last week chaired a meeting of the Green Economy Council to discuss the ways forward with eco-aware business.

"We need to minimise the burdens on business and industry during this transition, while we create the necessary conditions for green growth and investment in the green economy," he said.
