More mobile VoIP phones are likely to be in use by 2015, as wireless technology represents a growth area for the industry both at present and for the future, it is claimed.

Norm Bogen, vice-president of digital entertainment research for In-Stat, explains that VoIP phones in general have so far been embraced more by businesses than for home use.

Within domestic settings, they are typically in the form of residential gateways which provide the necessary network for VoIP to operate, but ultimately connect to regular time-division multiplexing phones.

In business, however, innovative solutions such as mobile VoIP could prove to be among the strongest trends of the coming years.

Mr Bogen predicts that, through until 2015, VoIP-enabled mobile phones which make use of Wi-Fi networks when they become available will increase in prevalence.

This combination of a regular cell phone, VoIP technology and Wi-Fi networking "is growing rapidly" already, he says.
