Usability will be the key to mobile video telephony taking off in the next few years, an expert has claimed.

In an article for Vision Mobile, director of technology and solution at video communications firm Radvision Tsahi Levent-Levi said the toughest problem facing the industry is delivering an interface that users are happy with.

Mr Levent-Levi went on to remark that the necessary bandwidth and processing power to make video calls via IP telephony are already in place.

However, it will take innovative approaches in the development of the video telephony software that will really add value to the customer, he continued.

"The moment that happens, you can be sure that mass adoption of mobile video telephony will become a reality," the expert commented.

Recent research by In-Stat showed the number of mobile VoIP users is set to jump to 139 million by 2014 in what could be a "transformational" period for the sector.
