Mobile VoIP users 'set to hit 139 million'

The number of mobile VoIP users is set to jump to 139 million by 2014, new figures have revealed.

Research company In-Stat predicted the next few years will be "transformational" in the mobile communications industry.

It went on to show that 39 per cent of revenues in the sector will be in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, with 32 per cent in Asia, 21 per cent in North America and eight per cent in the rest of the world.

In-Stat market analyst Amy Cravens said IP telephony is having a big impact in the market, with the number of users increasing all the time.

"As it becomes further incorporated into other mobile apps, specifically social networking apps, the realm of potential use is expected to broaden," she added.

A recent study by Research and Markets showed an increasing number of businesses are recognising the benefits of VoIP and explained how the introduction of 4G technologies could lead to uptake of the technology becoming even more rapid.
