People using Voip solutions in Aberdeen may soon benefit from high-speed broadband if recent calls to the UK government are answered.

MP for West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine Sir Robert Smith has spoken of his concerns about the region's internet connection in a Scottish Questions session in the Commons, local publication the Press and Journal reported.

The politician is to meet with secretary of state for Scotland Michael Moore to make his case, when he will argue that Aberdeen and the north-east of Scotland could lead the UK's economic recovery if the technology is improved.

"Our geographical location means that it is very important that our businesses, which contribute so much to both the Scottish and UK economies, have access to the fastest and most up-to-date broadband connections," Kate Yuill, policy and communications manager at the Aberdeen and Grampian Chamber of Commerce, told the news provider.

The UK government recently launched an initiative to provide cheap computers to the 9.2 million UK adults who currently do not have access to broadband.
