Firms have been encouraged to invest in hosted IP PBX now, as technology progresses and bandwidth costs decline.

Speaking to MyBroadband, managing director of Vox Orion Jacques du Toit described internet telephony as "a very attractive proposition".

"Many of our clients are considering a move into IP as their existing PBX infrastructure reaches the end of its lifecycle," he said.

Out of the three options for IP telephony, Vox Orion believes proprietary systems are the best, compared with the other two choices of pure-open source and commercial open source.

The entry of hosted PBX to the market as well as market deregulation have made this a good time to invest in new hardware, Mr du Toit told the news provider.

He stated that using IP telephony would save firms money, although they should check that their suppliers have redundancy in their platforms and interconnect points.

Another trend among companies is a move toward cloud computing, which was recently noted by chief executive officer at ThinkGrid Rob Lovell.
