Interconnected VoIP subscriptions in the US rose significantly in 2009, new figures from the Federal Communications Commission have shown.

The number of households and businesses employing VoIP solutions jumped by 22 per cent over the year, from 21 million to 26 million, the report revealed.

Meanwhile, it added that connections via traditional phone lines dropped by ten per cent over the same period.

Of the total 153 million total phone connections at the end of 2009, the analysis continued, residential IP telephony customers made up 15 per cent with two per cent from business.

It went on to reveal more than 80 per cent of VoIP customers received their service through a broadband bundle, with 87 per cent of these accessed via cable, 13 per cent along fibre-optics and less than one per cent through wireless connectivity.

"Interconnected VoIP service represents an important and rapidly growing part of the US voice service market," the study noted.

Deepika Mala recently revealed in an article for TMCnet that take-up of interconnected VoIP solutions has increased in recent months, thanks to the number of benefits it provides.
