VoIP has been named by a financial advice resource as one of the top ways to slash smart phone costs.

Making calls and sending text messages via the internet can result in massive savings for customers with limited voice and data volumes, as using wireless internet connections will not eat into paid-for call time, Bankrate reports.

Nick Mokey, associate editor at Digital Trends, said: "As long as there's a hot spot, you're not paying from your pool of minutes."

Another tip to cut mobile device charges is to go for a pre-paid agreement, the article continued, due to the competitiveness of this market at present.

Finally, the site recommended sending emails free via the internet instead of costly texts and taking advantage of many providers' five friends plan for cheaper communication costs to those numbers.

US VoIP services provider Vox Communications recently announced the launch of its new Vision Digital Video Phone, which features a built-in screen for video calls.
