VoIP solutions will increasingly incorporate Session Initiation Protocol (Sip) features in the next 12 months, it has been claimed.

Writing for Network World, Larry Hettick revealed demand for services such as Sip trunking - which allows businesses to make and receive calls using a single internet connection - rose in 2010.

Mr Hettick stated this trend is expected to continue in the coming year, especially in small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

This surge in demand for VoIP services such as Sip trunking will build "as the SME business case for Sip features becomes better understood and as carrier competition for Sip network services and support becomes more transparent," the expert explained.

He went on to predict the growth in popularity within large companies of cloud-based services - which include VoIP - will be sustained.

This will then increase the level of usablility for these services within the SME sector, the analyst concluded.
