Companies with mobile personnel should implement VoIP solutions, in the opinion of one expert.

Writing for Information Week, Kurt Marko stated moving to an IP PBX system is the best option for companies with large numbers of employees doing their jobs remotely.

Installing a VoIP-based phone number at a worker's home is a straightforward procedure that only requires minor configuration changes, he continued.

However, Mr Marko revealed smaller companies such as start-ups may find a hosted PBX more advantageous as it is involves less up-front investment.

The expert went on to explain that all companies should also think about how they provide unified communications features such as videoconferencing, instant messaging and real-time presence status.

"Given a telecommuter's physical isolation, these additional communication channels are particularly beneficial," he concluded.

Converged Telecoms co-owner Bryant Dennis recently commented firms must think carefully about whether to implement a one-off upgrade or adopt a phased migration when moving to VoIP.
