Businesses looking to implement hosted telephony do not need to undergo major changes to their IT infrastructure, according to one expert.

In an interview with Processor, Ring Carrier chief product officer Jeff Gigoux said employing hosted PBX will only lead to relatively small increases in bandwidth usage and in most cases will mean no major network changes are required.

He added that hosted telephony has massive benefits to businesses including minimising up-front costs.

VoIP Evolution chief analyst Robert Poe explained hosted PBX involves a service provider housing a corporate phone system in its own data centre rather than in a company's office.

"The service provider owns and operates the equipment and software. The customer company simply pays a predictable monthly fee, typically per user or per extension," he continued.

A recent survey by researcher In-Stat revealed expenditure on VoIP services is expected to grow by 60 per cent in the next four years.
