The government is to invest £830 million to provide super-fast broadband to every community in the UK by 2015, the culture secretary announced yesterday (December 6th 2010), which could be good news for VoIP users.

A coalition government action plan published by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, entitled Britain's Superfast Broadband Future, outlined the intention to make the country a high-speed "digital hub" connected by fibre technology within five years.

In a speech, Mr Hunt explained the plan is a critical part of the government's strategy to stimulate economic growth.

"A superfast network will be the foundation for a new economic dynamism, creating hundreds of thousands of jobs and adding billions to our GDP," he commented.

Rural affairs secretary Caroline Spelman said rolling out super-fast broadband across the country is vital to ensure the sustainability of rural areas.

A recent Ofcom report showed just 0.2 per cent of UK households have a high-speed internet connection compared with 34 per cent in Japan.
