The UK has been placed 24th in the list of countries with the best value for money consumer broadband in a new study.

Internet connectivity analyst Point Topic arrived at the 2010 third quarter rankings by studying the price per Mb of a one year contract in each nation.

Hong Kong came top of the pile, with a cost per Mb of $0.028 (£0.018), with Japan ($0.048) and Romania ($0.163) in second and third place.

Nine of the ten best connections offered online connectivity via fibre, with Unity Media in Germany the only top performer providing its service through cable.

The cost per Mb in the UK was calculated at $0.912, while the US came in 30th position with $1.315.

Fiona Vanier, senior analyst at Point Topic, said: "Higher speeds generally mean better value for the consumer. All that remains is to work out how best to use it."

Culture minister Ed Vaizey recently stated the government's ambition is for the UK to have the best superfast broadband network in Europe by 2015.
