Encryption is the best way to keep eavesdroppers away from VoIP calls, according to one industry expert.

In an article for VoIP News, John Edwards explained that without the right protection calls made via local and wireless networks or over the internet can be intercepted by anyone with the right equipment.

However, this problem can be solved by using encryption, which makes it virtually impossible for snoopers to listen in to calls, he stated.

Mr Edwards claimed the easiest way to ensure voice calls are encrypted is by downloading the relevant add-on software on to a computer from the internet, while many VoIP clients have it already built-in.

More advanced methods of keeping unwanted listeners off the line include adding transport layer security, internet protocol security or using secure real-time transfer protocol, he added.

Finally, the analyst remarked many offices have virtual private networks with security features already installed and can be used to encrypt VoIP calls.

Earlier this month, Sean Finney of California-based United Data Voice told Business News Daily VoIP is leading the way as an alternative to traditional telecoms provision for businesses.
