People who use smartphones in their jobs want companies to invest in models that let them join in the growing mobile data "craze", according to one industry expert.

Heather McLean, editor of trade publication Mobile Business, said individuals who are on VoIP services during the day want to be able to use the same device out of the office to access social networking sites like Facebook.

They are also looking for smartphones that they can download applications for and that make it easy to stay in touch with friends and family, she added.

"They want to be part of this new mobile data craze that's everywhere," Ms McLean stated.

Her comments follow the publication of research by Strategy Analytics that showed broadband traffic generated from handsets will account for around 30 per cent of global network loan by 2015.

This would represent a ten-fold increase compared with 2010, the company noted.
