Cloud 'offers economic benefits to business'Posted 1 year 5 months ago in: Broadband ![]() Telappliant News: 2010-11-24 Rate this article: Businesses including those using VoIP services could see significant "economic benefits" from the adoption of cloud computing, according to the UK's communications minister. Ed Vaizey told the UK-China Internet Forum that accessing applications over a broadband connection rather than investing in hardware and software could "drastically reduce costs" for companies and make it easier to break into new markets. "What they get ... is a sort of 'pay as you go' service tailored to their specific requirements," he told the audience. The minister added that cloud computing is becoming increasingly important thanks to the "explosion" in the use of portable devices like smartphones that have relatively limited storage capacity. By using web-based applications, users can "transcend that limitation" and achieve a level of functionality associated with much larger computers, Mr Vaizey stated. According to a poll for Mimecast by Loudhouse, over half (51 per cent) of companies in the UK and the US currently use at least one cloud computing tool.

Moving application and storage into the cloud makes sense, especially for medium and small businesses. However, it is essential that you still have a capable and knowledgeable CIO to make any transition and to be a point person between senior management and the cloud provider. Making the cloud move will not fix all your IT issues, but it will certainly make them more flexible and less costly in the long run. New comments* Comments may be moderated. |
