Global VoIP traffic could be set to rise after new research revealed broadband subscriptions are expected to grow.

Market research firm iSuppli has released a new report which shows that worldwide broadband subscriptions are predicted to grow by 5.8 per cent in the third quarter of 2010 to 16.5 million.

Furthermore, the firm also unveiled its predictions for the fourth quarter of the year which stated that the number of broadband lines is expected to grow by a further 7.3 per cent to reach a total of 17.7 million.

The widespread availability of super-fast internet services could result in rapid VoIP traffic growth as more consumers have sufficient bandwidth to access high-quality IP telephony solutions.

Lee Ratliff, senior analyst for broadband and digital home at iSuppli, said: "Broadband subscriber additions declined in the second quarter because of normal seasonality as well as a poor performance in the North American market.

"However, Chinese consumers' insatiable demand for high-speed internet is so high that it will cause subscriber numbers to rise again in the second half of the year."
