VoIP services users should operate their communication system over a Virtual Private Network (VPN), it has been claimed.

US VoIP solutions provider Patton Technologies has released a report which advises firms to use a VPN, a private network which traverses the internet, to secure VoIP calls in a cost-effective manner.

According to Patton, VoIP-over-VPN allows organisations to secure both their voice and data streams by adding encryption software to VoIP gateways.

In 2006, Patton introduced this technology to their routers, enabling senders to encrypt their voice data to prevent hackers from eavesdropping on any private calls.

Patton wrote in its Securing Internet Telephony: Encrptying Voice with VoIP-over-VPN report: "By encrypting both voice and data, VoIP-over-VPN unlocks the cost-savings of VoIP for security conscious enterprises."

Telecommunications security firm Sectra recently released a MicroSD card which can allow mobile phone users to protect their conversation at all points of the line.
