VoIP services have been used by a Republican running for Congress in today's (2nd November) mid-term elections, according to reports.

The Telegraph has revealed that Patrick Murray is using the technology in his quest to beat the popular Democrat Jim Moran, who has held the seat for ten terms.

Mr Murray and his campaigning team did not have the funds for TV and radio adverting so they purchased 30 VoIP phones to target voters in Virginia's eighth Congressional District.

The handsets can instantly record a voter's responses, allowing Murray's team to identify crucial issues and adjust their campaign strategy accordingly.

Liam Maxwell, a researcher at the Centre for Policy Studies and campaigner for Murray, told the news provider: "In a very short period of time we were able to see the value of the VoIP technology.

"After our calling was finished the campaign team could tell us in real time what impact our calls were having and how they were using the data. Their feedback was available instantly."
