London Underground (LU) passengers could soon be able to access VoIP services, it has been revealed.

BT Openzone, a division of the telecoms giant, has teamed up with LU to launch a six-month trial of Wi-Fi access at Charing Cross station.

From 1st November, consumers will be able to use their laptops, mobile phones and other wireless devices to connect to a wireless network while underground.

This could enable users to access IP telephony solutions at the Tube stop and therefore allow customers to make VoIP calls where there is no network coverage.

Chris Bruce, chief executive of BT Openzone, said: "Wi-Fi is rapidly becoming the simplest way for people to access the internet when out and about and with the launch of this trial at Charing Cross we are now giving commuters the chance to enjoy the UK's biggest Wi-Fi network."

The service will be free for the five million BT broadband customers who have unlimited Wi-Fi minutes and all BT Openzone subscribers.
