Employees should be trained how to use VoIP services in order to unlock the potential of the technology, it has been claimed.

Consultancy firm Bain & Company is currently upgrading its telephone network to allow its 5,000 workers to benefit from VoIP solutions, reports The Financial Times.

In order to ensure its staff understand how to operate the new system, Bain is offering face-to-face and online training sessions.

Sachin Shah, a partner in Bain & Company's IT practice, told the news provider: "Because we've given people something quite sophisticated, there is no way that they will get the most out of it unless they are trained. The cost savings in communications more than pays for the training.

"When it comes to the more sophisticated technologies businesses use, you do have to equip people to use them."

The new telephone network should be installed by early next year, with staff also issued with new laptops featuring the latest versions of Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel.
