VoIP solutions in the UK could be set to benefit from the extension of Three's mobile broadband network.

The mobile operator has added 4,900 3G cellular sites to its British network as part of the £400 million upgrade, taking the total figure to 12,400.

The expansion will allow 97 per cent of the UK population to access a 3G signal, with coverage available in remote areas such as Lands End and the Shetland Islands.

Mobile VoIP traffic could rise following the upgrade as more people will be able to use the 3G network to make internet-based calls.

Kevin Russell, chief executive of Three UK, expressed his gratitude to the 3,300 engineers who made the work possible.

He said: "Smartphone and mobile broadband use is exploding and we have built a 3G network that reaches further than ever before, as well as bringing more capacity into urban areas where our customers need it most."
