US telecommunications firm Pinger is set to release a new VoIP solutions application for Apple devices, it has been revealed.

The California-based company is currently testing the software which allows iPod touch and iPhone users to make free or low-cost VoIP calls via Wi-Fi.

Customers can earn VoIP minutes by purchasing applications from the Apple store, with more expensive apps worth more call time.

Pinger's Textfree application is proving to be popular in the US as it enables users to send text messages free of charge.

The software has been downloaded more than eight million times, while over four billion texts have been sent using Textfree.

"The media age for our customers is 18, and that demographic, they don't pay for anything," said Pinger co-founder Joe Sipher.

Mr Sipher added that the new service could potentially double Pinger's revenue. The firm currently generates the majority of its income from advertising.
