British VoIP solutions could improve as a result of a new BT survey which encourages communities to declare their interest in fibre-optic broadband services.

The telecommunications giant will launch its The Race to Infinity survey this month in order to establish where demand for super-fast broadband is highest.

All of the responses will be logged onto a website, with BT confirming it will deploy five exchanges to the areas which are most in need of fibre-based internet.

IP telephony solutions are likely to profit from the move as faster download speeds can boost the audio quality of VoIP calls.

Ed Vaizey, communications minister, said: "Whenever I travel around the UK I hear the same message - people want access to superfast broadband in their communities.

"I warmly welcome any initiative that will lead to private sector investment in fibre networks, and applaud the way BT is engaging consumers to ensure that investment reaches the people who want it the most."
