Businesses in Shetland will have greater access to VoIP services following the rollout of fibre-optic broadband internet connections to the remote Scottish archipelago.

European funding has been allocated to the creation of a fibre-optic network across the Shetland.

Vastly improved broadband connections are expected as a result of the scheme, which could help small and medium-sized businesses to cut their costs by using VoIP services.

The programme is one of a number in the Highlands and Islands that has secured European funding, finance secretary John Swinney explained.

"In order to maintain the fragile economic recovery that is underway we have ensured that European Structural Fund allocations are directed towards projects that can help build sustainable economic growth," he said.

"This is particularly good news for residents and businesses in Shetland, where the fibre optic cable will greatly enhance broadband connections.

Earlier this week, it was highlighted by VoiceOne Asia how companies of all sizes can benefit from using VoIP solutions, thanks to cost savings on call charges and infrastructure spending.
