The quality of VoIP solutions in the US could improve following the decision to free up television airwaves for super-fast Wi-Fi.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the US regulatory body, has voted in favour of opening up the vacant spectrum between channels for next-generation mobile broadband.

These "white spaces" are ideal for wireless internet networks as signals are stronger, faster and more reliable.

IP telephony solutions users could benefit from the technology as customers would be able to make high-quality VoIP calls in various Wi-Fi hotspots.

Julius Genachowski, FCC Chairman, claimed the move could also open the doors to a "myriad of other diverse applications".

He said: "It will enhance our economy and strengthen our global competitiveness, lead to billions of dollars in private investment and to valuable new products and services - some we can imagine, and many we can't."

It is the first time in 25 years that a large band of spectrum has been opened up.
