A new Wi-Fi phone has been released which allows nurses to make VoIP calls while in hospitals, it has been revealed.

Unified Communications provider Polycom has released the Polycom SpectraLink 8400 handset, enabling users to access the internet via Wi-Fi.

The model is specifically designed to allow nurses to keep in contact with fellow staff members, while Polycom claims industry and retail workers can also benefit from the phone.

Users can access information wirelessly which could be crucial for roles where time is critical, such as a nurse.

Jim Kruger, Polycom vice president of solutions product marketing, expressed his delight at the firm's latest offering.

He said: "Having access to people and data when and where you need it is important for any business, but is mission-critical in environments like hospitals, manufacturing facilities and large retail stores."
