VoIP traffic in rural areas of the US could rise following the roll out of broadband services.

US firm Tehan Woglake, which means "far reaching" in the Native American language of Lakota, is raising $500,000 (£320,000) from state and private sources to fund the project, reports Indian Country Today.

The new company will provide high-speed internet access to the most rural regions of the country, as well as Native American tribes and communities.

Subscribers will be able to access VoIP solutions for the first time, allowing business and home users to potentially cut their phone bills.

Joe Valandra, chief executive of Tehan Woglake, told the news provider: "We believe that this is a one-time opportunity – maybe the best in a lifetime – for tribes in rural America to be pulled up roughly to be equitable with the rest of the country when it comes to technology."

Tehan Woglake is planning to deploy its broadband network across 15 states, connecting around 2.8 million households and business to its service.
