A US college has chosen to upgrade its traditional phone system and adopt a new VoIP service, it has been revealed.

Western State College, based in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, installed IP telephony solutions throughout its administration offices and dormitories, reports tmc.net.

The institution deployed the new technology during its renovation of its offices and was initially faced with a $20,000 (£12,800) to connect the dormitories to its VoIP network via cabling.

However, college officials decided to install a Phybridge UniPhyer which boosts the signal of the voice and data network, allowing dormitory users to access the new communication system.

Western State College was able to purchase new VoIP phones, as well as new computers and printers, with the money they saved.

Chad Robinson, director of computer services at Western State College, told the news provider: "We have put IP phones on the Phybridge UniPhyer network switch and it works great."
