Mobile VoIP traffic could rise following the release of a new application for the Android platform.

Cicero Networks is set to launch its CiceroPhone software which enables Android users to access IP telephony solutions while on the move.

The software automatically selects the network used to make calls, supporting a range of different types including 2G, 3G and Wi-Fi.

CiceroPhone also supports seamless in-call transfer, allowing consumers to switch between internet and cellular networks during conversations.

Elaine Treacy, vice president of marketing and strategic alliances at Cicero Networks, claimed the growing popularity of Android offers many opportunities to VoIP providers.

She said: "Android's open source model allows us to deploy the software as an application in the field or to work with device manufacturers to offer a fully integrated and seamless user experience."

The software will be available in October, with future releases reported to include VoIP video calling.

Solid move. The clever part is to use encryption for VoIP - then you can use the most convenient data connection for where you are (speed & cost) - perhaps the Cellular network or WiFi to make secure voice calls back into your office (or through a service provider like Morrigan Partners).
In Europe using WiFi is great for avoiding excessive cross-border surcharges.
cheers Andrew
