US VoIP solutions could benefit from plans to deploy a new advanced Wi-Fi system throughout the country.

In 2008, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted to open up the airwaves between TV channels to allow wireless broadband to operate in these 'white spaces'.

These white spaces can support super-fast Wi-Fi on a larger scale than traditional wireless internet, while it can also enable a signal to travel through buildings.

This could allow VoIP users to make phone calls in areas which previously received little or no Wi-Fi signal.

The FCC is now set to meet later this month to resolve any issues surrounding the technology, with plans to make the project operational in 12 months time.

Julius Genachowski, the chairman of the FCC, claimed technology firms will be keen to adopt the service as an upgrade to conventional Wi-Fi.

He said: "We're hoping history will repeat itself. White spaces are a big deal for consumers and for investment and innovation."
