VoIP solutions could benefit from a new study into the performance of mobile broadband.

Communications regulator Ofcom has chosen Welsh firm Epitiro to analyse the download speeds delivered by mobile operators 3, O2, Orange, T-Mobile and Vodafone.

The study could improve the quality of mobile IP telephony solutions as phone operators may have to deliver faster mobile internet.

Ofcom decided to launch the investigation after consumers became increasingly concerned they were not accessing the advertised mobile broadband speeds.

The regulator told technology website zdnet.co.uk: "Actual speeds delivered via mobile networks are typically well below the 'up to' speeds which are advertised.

"Satisfaction levels with mobile broadband performance also seem significantly below satisfaction with other [broadband] services."

Recent research by Ofcom revealed that 71 per cent of mobile broadband users are satisfied with their service compared with 81 per cent of fixed broadband customers.
