A new VoIP service could be adopted by more businesses following the launch of what looks like Microsoft's next venture into the market for enterprise communications.

According to ZDNet, Microsoft is believed to be rolling together the next versions of its Communicator client for office communications and Microsoft Live Meeting.

The result could be Microsoft Lync, the supposed name of the Redmond software company's new all-in-one instant messaging, VoIP and conferencing product.

Microsoft has refused to confirm or deny rumours swelling around the alleged new product.

A spokesperson for the company told the website: "We have nothing to announce today, but please stay tuned for news about Microsoft Communications Server 14."

Google is also in the process of rolling out a VoIP service and is introducing its popular new offering in countries around the world following its launch in the US last month.

The program lets users place VoIP calls from inside Google Mail and is free of charge for domestic calls, while international call rates are also much cheaper.
