VoIP solutions in rural areas of Northern Ireland could benefit from a government fund designed to improve broadband access.

The £1.9 million Northern Ireland Broadband Fund, co-financed by the European Union, offers financial support to projects which provide rural areas with high-speed internet services.

IP telephony solutions users could profit from the move as faster download speeds can improve call connectivity and audio quality.

Towns along the north Antrim coast will be the latest to access broadband as local firm North West Electronics continues to extend its operations.

Arlene Foster, enterprise minister, praised North West Electronics for its latest project.

She said: "This is very welcome news and is further evidence of the commitment that my department has made to getting high quality broadband services into the most rural locations of Northern Ireland."

North West Electronics is also set to increase the average speed of its service from 2Mbps to 5Mbps.
