VoIP solutions in Dundee could be boosted by the installation of a new fibre-optic broadband network in the city.

Fibrecity, which is part of the i3 group, has announced that it has begun rolling out its super-fast internet service to homes and businesses.

The firm will deploy the cables across sewers and underneath pavements to deliver download speeds of up to 100Mbps.

VoIP service users could be among the many consumers to profit from the service as next-generation broadband can improve call quality.

Will Dawson, convener of Dundee City Council's City Development Committee, confirmed residents will be notified before the service goes live.

He said: "This brings Dundee a step closer to becoming the first city in Scotland to have every one of its homes and business premises able to access next generation broadband."

Fibrecity claims it will connect around 4,000 customers every month following the installation of the service.
